Here’s the scoop: Programmable thermostats automatically adjust the temperature of your house to the times you’ll be home, sleeping and away. It automatically adjusts your home cooler at night (while you’re sleeping), and warms/cools to the desired temperature when you’ll be coming home or waking up. This helps conserve energy so your furnace and AC aren’t running needlessly. There are two different types of programmable thermostats: A 5 and 2 day (same schedule 5 days during the week, and an alternate schedule for the weekend), and a 7 day (all days of the week can be programmed differently depending on your schedule). These thermostats can be purchased from $20 to $700. Most homeowners however can just buy a $50 Honeywell  7 Day Programmable thermostat. It takes about 15 minutes to install at the existing thermostat location and about 20 minutes to program it. This unit has a digital display and can be programmed for heating and cooling. You won’t have to worry about forgetting to adjust the temperature before you leave, or your house being uncomfortable when you come home. It also prevents you from being too hot or cool, once you set the desired temperature, it stays that way.
